How to recognize and treat athlete's foot

toenails affected by fungus

Mycoses are diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms (fungi).The disease does not pose a mortal threat to humans, but it causes discomfort and is difficult to treat.Most often, people with weak immune systems, hormonal imbalances, and people who do not follow personal hygiene rules are prone to infections.The treatment of the fungus sometimes lasts 3-4 months with the whole range of medicines.In order to enhance the therapeutic effect of drugs, doctors prescribe traditional medicine prescriptions.The key to successful treatment is timely recognition of the disease.In the early stages, mycoses respond more easily to antifungal drugs.

Types and symptoms of dermatomycosis

Science knows thousands of species of fungi, but only a few hundred of them are pathogenic to humans.

athlete's foot symptoms

Types of microorganisms that cause foot mycosis:

  • trichophytons;
  • dermatophytes;
  • candida.

The first signs of mycosis are quite difficult to recognize.How the fungus looks on the foot depends on the type of microorganism affecting the soft tissues.

Intertriginal form

The most common type of fungal infection.It occurs in summer when the feet sweat.The folds in the interdigital space suffer first, and later the infection spreads to nearby areas and the nail plate.

First signs:

  • dry skin between fingers;
  • cracks and wounds;
  • severe itching and burning;
  • peeling and discoloration of the epidermis.

Epithelial form

This type of fungal infection affects the lower part of the foot.The skin appears rough, calluses, keratinized areas and deep cracks appear.A person experiences pain while walking.

The disease develops rapidly, affecting the surrounding area and the nail plate.In advanced cases, the nail changes its color, shape and begins to crumble.

Important!

When you first suspect a yeast infection, see a doctor immediately for evaluation and treatment.

Dyshidrotic form

This type of mushroom is rare.The first symptoms are watery, multichambered blisters on the skin with cloudy contents.Ulcers appear at the site of the erupted formations, which merge into continuous erosion.

dyshidrotic fungus on the legs

The main danger of this form of mycosis is the addition of simultaneous infections.Pathogenic microorganisms penetrate the wounds and cause other dermatological diseases.In the absence of timely treatment, large areas of the legs are affected.It will be very difficult to cure mycosis.

Reasons

The main mode of transmission of infection is contact.If the basic rules of personal hygiene are not observed, it can become infected through the household items used by the patient.The exfoliating particles of the epidermis, together with the causative agent of the disease, remain on shoes, towels and the place of residence of the infected person.Once on the surface of the skin of a healthy person, the fungus actively reproduces.

Spores of pathogenic microorganisms can persist in the environment for many months until they reach favorable conditions.Public places - swimming pools, showers, baths, saunas, gym locker rooms - pose a great risk of infection.

In order to avoid infection, hygiene rules must be observed: change socks daily, wear comfortable shoes in which your feet do not sweat, and dry the space between the toes well with a towel after washing.

Treatment of fungus with drugs

An important factor in getting rid of mycosis of the skin is a complete examination and timely initiation of treatment prescribed by a doctor.

Getting rid of the fungus is quite difficult.A number of external and systemic medications will be required.First you need to determine the type of pathogen.This can only be done in a special laboratory.

Ointments, creams

Medicines of this type penetrate to a large extent into the affected tissue and reach the mycelium.

Antimycotic ointments can be divided into 2 types:

  • Azole.It suppresses cell growth and destroys the mycelium.Treatment with azole ointments usually lasts about a month;
  • Allyl amine.It has a harmful effect on yeasts and molds.This type of ointment has antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects.It refers to cheap, effective tools.The duration of therapy is usually 3 months.

Advantages of ointments:

  • no harmful effects on the gastrointestinal tract and liver;
  • local use allows maximum effect on the pathogen;
  • versatile use for the treatment of skin and nail fungus.

Characteristics of the use of antifungal ointments:

  • before applying the drugs, the feet should be thoroughly washed and dried with a towel;
  • the medicine is applied in a thin layer with rubbing movements on the affected surface;
  • do not get the medicine on the mucous membranes - nose, eyes, mouth;
  • Follow the instructions for use and your dermatologist's recommendations.

Tablets

For more effective treatment of advanced mycoses, systemic therapy is prescribed together with external local drugs.

Tablets for the treatment of severe forms differ in the active ingredient:

  • Based on ketoconazole.It is prescribed for the treatment of superficial mycosis, which cannot be treated with topical agents.It kills yeast, dimorphic fungi and dermatophytes;
  • Based on terbinafine.Affects dermatophytes;
  • Based on griseofulvin.Affects dermatophytes.It prevents the proliferation of fungi and destroys cell walls.This drug shows increased toxicity, so modern medicine is gradually pushing it out of the pharmaceutical market;
  • Based on fluconazole.Tablets belong to the group of azoles.It helps to get rid of the disease quickly.

Together with the treatment of fungal infections of the feet, drugs that stimulate the immune system and vitamin-mineral complexes are prescribed to better overcome the disease.

Home treatment with folk remedies

Removal of the fungus with alternative medicine recipes is possible only in the early stages or in combination with drugs.

Important!

Before starting self-treatment at home, an examination must be carried out and a doctor must be consulted.

Iodine

The universal antiseptic is not only bactericidal, but also fungicidal.Lubrication of the affected areas at night is recommended.A sensitivity test must be performed before the procedure.To do this, apply a small amount of iodine to the bend of the elbow.If after a few hours there is no redness, burning or itching, you can use this method.Take a foot bath before going to bed, then wipe the skin thoroughly with a terry towel.In order to avoid chemical burns, iodine must be diluted with medical alcohol in a ratio of 1:1.Using a cotton swab, apply a thin layer of the solution evenly to the areas affected by the fungus.Cotton socks are worn on top.Nail plates are also treated for prevention.

You can make an effective iodine-based "chat":

  1. Grind 14 antifungal tablets into powder;
  2. Mix with 100 ml of 1% dimexide and leave in a dark place for a day;
  3. Add 10 ml of iodine and vinegar essence.

The resulting mixture is stored in the refrigerator and mixed thoroughly before use.It should be applied 1-2 times a day with a cotton ball to the affected skin surfaces.The duration of the treatment is 1 month.

Hydrogen peroxide

Another well-known antiseptic that helps fight athlete's foot.The solution is applied in the form of applications in problem areas.Ten minutes twice a day is enough to overcome mycoses in the early stages within 5-10 days.

A foot steamer made with the addition of peroxide can be considered useful.Dilute with water in a 1:1 ratio.The solution is small, but only the affected part of the foot needs to be inserted.The procedure takes 30-40 minutes.The liquid must not come into contact with healthy skin, as it strongly dries out the soft tissues.

Celandine

The herb successfully treats many skin diseases, including mycoses.Decoctions are used for poultices and baths.If you have a freshly harvested plant, you can try to cure the fungus with fresh juice.

To do this, select the bush and wash it in running water.Prepare the legs by steaming and removing scales.Yellow juice appears on the cut of the stem.Lubricate the affected surfaces.If you self-treat with celandine at home, you should be very careful.This plant is poisonous.Its juice can cause severe skin burns.

For steaming, we prepare 5 tablespoons of the decoction.l.herbs for 1 liter.boiling water Infuse the solution in a container with a tightly closed lid for 20 minutes.Afterwards, a foot bath is performed.

Apple cider vinegar

The acidic environment in which it cannot grow and exist helps to eliminate the fungus.Apple cider vinegar is used in the form of foot baths and applications.

If the affected area is small, it is enough to soak a cotton ball or a piece of cotton cloth with an aggressive substance.If it is widespread, apply rich baby cream to protect healthy areas of the skin and wear socks soaked in vinegar.

It is used to acidify water for foot baths.After such steaming, the skin is thoroughly dried and other natural drugs or pharmaceutical preparations are applied.

Other home treatments

Traditional medicine offers various tips to get rid of fungus and its manifestations.Such products are easy to prepare from ingredients that are available in any home.

Homemade ointments:

  • Mix yellow sulfur, copper sulfate and goose fat in equal proportions in an enameled dish.Bring to a boil over low heat and transfer to a glass container.The ointment is stored in the refrigerator.Apply daily in the morning and evening to the affected skin areas;
  • Add wood ash to the goose fat.Mix until smooth.Lubricate problem areas with the mixture twice a day;
  • Mix the butter with the chopped garlic.Apply the resulting mass to the affected skin overnight.

Ointments prepared according to the recipes of traditional medicine have a positive effect only in the initial stages of the disease.In the case of advanced mycosis, it is used in combination with tablets.

Compressions:

onion and garlic against athlete's foot
  • Onion-garlic.Crush a medium onion and 2 cloves of garlic into a paste.The mixture is spread in a thick layer on the skin, covered with a plastic bag and secured with a bandage.Cotton socks are placed on top.The procedure is carried out before going to bed.In the morning, the compress is removed and the feet are washed with warm water and soap.This method helps to cope with the disease within 7-10 days;

Important!

Before any treatment procedure, steam your feet for 15-20 minutes.

Baths:

  • The most common and simplest steaming solution consists of 1 tbsp.l.table or sea salt, 1 tbsp.l.baking soda and 1 l.water.The procedure takes 15 minutes.Then wash the feet with warm running water and dry them;
